Vintage furniture

The Bergere is in walnut, finely carved and sculpted. Rare model for its size, it was born as a rest or reading chair, used in the European aristocracy as a place for reflection by the head of the family. The bergere in question is an example of Turin manufacturing. Elegant in its shape and deep seat, it is finely sculpted with stylistic features typical of Turin art. The conical and 'shelled' leg ends in the upper part with a repeated rose window on the side. The upper part continues the elegant style and decoration typical of Piedmontese furniture, inherited from French cabinetmaking and revisited according to our taste. The state of conservation is excellent. The parts are all original and in patina.

This piece of furniture is a beautiful example of design by the famous architect Pelagio Palagi, author of furniture and interiors for various palaces of the royal family (an example is the Etruscan Cabinet of the Racconigi castle). The design of the psyche is actually very similar to the works of Pelagi, with a decoration similar to the grotesques of the Domus Aurea interpreted in Charles X according to the taste of the architect. The woods used are very precious and the inlay is clean and executed with precision.The elegance of the furniture and the style of execution is in line with the works carried out by Gabriele Capello known as Moncalvo, cabinetmaker of great importance in the artistic field real and who collaborated numerous times with Pelagio Pelagi. In fact, there are many examples of collaboration between the two; Pelagio Pelagi drew while Moncalvo executed and interpreted them. (An example of their collaboration is the Etruscan Cabinet in Racconigi). The double swan-shaped rose window is typical of Moncalvo's works, often repeated on sofas, armchairs and chairs.

La specchiera, di tipico di stile torinese, risulta finemente intagliata in tutti i suoi spazi, in particolare nella parte superiore, dove una grande ghirlanda aumenta la bellezza ed il prestigio dell’opera. Intagliata a ‘foglia di granturco’ alterna una doratura con oro lucido ed opaco in grado di creare maggior risalto e lucentezza nelle parti che più lo richiedono. L’opera rappresenta senza dubbio un grande esempio di ebanisteria piemontese della meta del Settecento. Abbiamo poi alcuni rari esemplari di specchiere scolpite a ‘foglia di granturco’ che ci fanno propendere per un lavoro di una bottega specifica, che non è ancora stata identificata, ma che sappiamo che era operante nella città di Torino. Lo stato di conservazione dell’opera è ottimo: la doratura è originale e ben conservata.
