Marcel Breuer

Marcel Breuer è stato un architetto e designer ungherese. Ha partecipato in modo attivo alla Bauhaus ed al movimento moderno.

Dopo un breve periodo di tirocinio presso uno studio d'architettura a Parigi, tornò presso la scuola del Bauhaus dal 1925 come insegnante e fino al 1928 diresse il laboratorio del mobile. Sotto la sua direzione, dal 1926 in poi, i laboratori iniziarono a produrre sedie e tavoli in tubolari d'acciaio.

Cominciò così la progettazione di mobili moderni in tubolare metallico, tra cui le sue famose sedie sia in legno e schienale in stoffa sia in tubolare di ferro con schienale impagliato. La sua carriera non si limita al progetto architettonico e di design, ma approfondisce lo studio di nuovi materiali come l'eisengarn che sarà successivamente utilizzato per la prima volta da Breuer nella Sedia Wassily.

The Wassily Chair, also known as the Model B3 chair, was designed by Marcel Breuer. In 1925 he was director of the wood workshop at the Bauhaus in Dessau. The B3 chair became a mass product in the sixties after Dino Gavina in 1962, after having met the Hungarian designer in New York, had convinced him to re-edit the tubular chair. When Gavina learned that Kandinsky had asked that the first specimen be destined for the living room of her apartment, she decided to produce it with the name Wassily. the chair is one of the major design icons of the twentieth century and is present in many museums in the world.
